A wheat-free Japanese sweet that's almost too cute to eat
Whenever I travel to Chiba, one souvenir I always make sure to buy is the Peanuts Monaka from Nagomi no Yoneya.
Since it is made without wheat or dairy ingredients, it has become one of our family's favorite treats. With its adorable gift box and peanut-shaped monaka, it also has a long shelf life, making it one of my favorite souvenirs to bring home.
The ingredients are wonderfully simple: sugar, white kidney beans, reduced starch syrup, candied peanuts, azuki beans, monaka wafers (made from glutinous rice), peanut paste, and agar. No wheat is used.
The crisp, fragrant monaka wafer is filled with a generous amount of rich peanut-flavored bean paste. It's quite sweet and rich—so much so that I feel like I could enjoy several cups of Japanese green tea with just half of one. That sweetness makes it the perfect treat for a relaxing break during the day.
Every time I buy it, I find myself thinking it's almost too cute to eat, and even after I've finished the sweets, I can never quite bring myself to throw away the box.
This article features the 8-piece box, but it is also available in 5-, 12-, 16-, and 30-piece boxes. You can find Peanuts Monaka at many souvenir shops and service areas throughout Chiba Prefecture, and some stores also sell them individually.
