A Temple Café for a Different Kind of Experience
Located about a 10-minute walk from Kokubunji Station on the JR Chuo Line, Kissako KAIPAN is a cafe located in the building of Kiwada Funeral Hall on the grounds of Shoouji Temple.They serve gluten-free pasta and lunch dishes, as well as tiramisu and Japanese sweets.
Perhaps because the cafe is located within the temple grounds, there is a quiet, composed atmosphere that naturally helps you relax.
The name “Kissako” comes from a Zen expression and is said to mean something like “Please have some tea.”
For lunch, I had the gluten-free pasta from the lunch menu, followed by tiramisu and coffee for dessert.
The pasta is made with a blend of corn and rice flour noodles, but you can also choose white rice noodles or brown rice noodles for an additional charge.
The dishes are mainly made with locally sourced vegetables, without meat, fish, or chemical seasonings.The flavors are simple and the salt is quite mild, but I didn’t feel that they were lacking in flavor at all.
The cafe also has terrace seating, and dogs are welcome to accompany their owners.
There are koi in the pond, and you can also take a short walk around the temple grounds. Since it is within the temple grounds, though, I tried to keep my voice down and be respectful..'ヮ').
It was nice to enjoy the food while also having a chance to reconnect with a part of Japanese culture that I don’t often think about in everyday life. There was something about the atmosphere that made me naturally sit up a little straighter, and I would like to visit again.
Next time, I’d like to enjoy some Japanese sweets with tea.
