Located about a 15-minute walk from the north exit of Mitaka Station, 5 1/2 GOHAN BAKERY is a small bakery offering bread made entirely with rice flour. All of its bread is gluten-free.

5 1/2 GOHAN BAKERY's "Run Run Brioche" won three awards at the 3rd Delicious Rice Flour Bread Contest in Yamagata, held in January 2026: the Grand Prix, the My Rice Flour Bread Award, and the Gluten-Free Award. I had been curious about it for a long time.
The shop is small, with a wide variety of gluten-free breads packed onto the shelves. Everything looked good, so it was hard to choose. I ended up buying brioche, cream bread, anpan, melon bread, and even a baguette. By the time I got home, I had bought so much that I wondered if we would be able to finish it all.
The next day, we warmed up the brioche for lunch. We looked at each other and said, “Is this really made with rice flour?” It was surprisingly soft and light.
It was delicious simply warmed up with butter or jam, and I think it would also make a good sandwich with lettuce, cheese, or ham.
The bakery also had a good selection of savory breads, including corn bread, mentaiko French bread, yakitori-flavored bread, garlic French bread, and bacon rolls. The bread can also be frozen, so buying a few different kinds and keeping them in the freezer is a good option.
The melon bread and cream bread we brought home were also soft and delicious. I can see why people become fans of this bakery.
Next time, I’d like to take home more of the savory breads.
