Although cafe-3po does not specifically promote itself as a gluten-free restaurant, you may be able to make the onigiri gluten-free by asking for them without nori (seaweed).

Located about a 4-minute walk from Nakagawara Station in Fuchu, Tokyo, cafe-3po is a café where you can enjoy rice bowls topped with meat cooked using various koji-based seasonings, including shio koji, amazake koji, and soy sauce koji. The café does not specifically advertise itself as gluten-free, but while I was out one day, I happened to spot a sign for onigiri (rice balls) and immediately wanted to try them.

These bento boxes look so colorful and delicious!!!

I can’t resist stopping by a place whenever I spot something I can eat.

As the sign suggested, the shop had a wide selection of onigiri on display, along with bento boxes and other items.

The rice used for the onigiri is said to be Tsuyahime, a specially cultivated variety from Yamagata Prefecture, while the salt is sun-dried salt from Kochi Prefecture.
You may be wondering about the nori,
since it can sometimes contain wheat-derived ingredients. I asked if they could make my onigiri without the nori, and they were able to accommodate my request.

I ordered the Benizake (red salmon) and Tuna Mayo. Freshly made onigiri are simply delicious. There is something special about having an onigiri just when you are craving one—it really hits the spot.

Depending on the day's selection, Shio Musubi (salted rice ball) and Ume (pickled plum) may also be options.

So many onigiri!

Wednesdays are spice curry days, and they appear to offer a spice curry made without wheat. Next time, I definitely want to come back for the curry! If you are okay with soy sauce, you’ll have even more options, including rice bowls.
The café also seems to prepare catering meals for film and TV productions, so it may be worth checking their Instagram regularly for the latest menu.
